Overview
The Ramikin, later changed to TECHMILA, was a student-produced RIT yearbook that was published from 1912 to 1993.
The choice of “R. A. M. I. -kin” initially seemed especially appropriate, as a ramekin could be considered an emblem of domestic science. However, the real and broader meaning of the name encompasses all the alumni and friends, all the “kin” of the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute.
In September 1945, the student body decided to change the name from The Ramikin to TECHMILA.
The discovery that the word “technology” comes from the Greek “technikos” led to the decision to “Let Tech Speak” through the yearbook, capturing the words and pictures of the school and its spirit. To maintain a connection with the Greek roots, the word “milos,” meaning “speak,” was incorporated, resulting in the final choice of TECHMILA.
