Key Initiatives

Alternative Spring Break

Students who participate spend five to seven days during spring break learning about critical challenges facing communities, interacting with local leaders, and performing short-term projects with community agencies.

Into the ROC

Into the ROC gives students the opportunity to explore the greater Rochester community. Participants spend an evening during the week or a few hours on the weekend either doing community service with a local nonprofit or enjoying a local play, comedy show, museum, or other cultural experience in the city.

On Campus Service Projects

Each year, hundreds of RIT students, faculty, and staff support the local community through on-campus service projects like the Hunger Project and the Framing Frenzy. In 2018, 50,688 meals were package for the local community during the Hunger Project and the frames for 2 homes were built during the Framing Frenzy.

Hunger Project

Each year, hundreds of RIT students, faculty, and staff prepare thousands of meals for the community during Giving Tuesday’s Hunger Project. In 2018, 50,688 meals were packaged during the day-long on-campus event. Meals are donated to RIT’s own FoodShare program and FoodLink.

Community Service Fairs

The Community Service Fairs are offered at the beginning of the fall and spring semesters and offer students an opportunity to interact with representatives from more than 30 local nonprofit organizations.

Scholarship Opportunities

Annually, the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement awards over $50,000 to returning students who are actively engaged in leadership and service on campus and in the community.
