EChOes of the Neretva Delta: wings of the wind

Location

Our project is driven by the growing public interest in understanding the human impact on nature and climate change. We aim to demonstrate the significance of individual species and habitats by assessing the level of threat posed by human activities. Our focus is on the Neretva delta, a unique ecosystem located nearby, renowned as one of Europe's last wetland habitats and a vital stopover for millions of migratory birds along the Adriatic flyway. The Neretva Delta encompasses a diverse range of environments, including marine, river, swamp, cave, and mountain ecosystems, making it a crucial biome. However, it faces various anthropogenic pressures such as intensive agriculture, pollution, salinity, and the development of hydropower. Additionally, with the shift towards renewable energy, the impact of wind farms and solar collectors on the delta's ecosystem remains to be explored. To showcase the importance of the delta, we will create a detailed model depicting its various features, including the sea, river, fields, swamp, hills, and mountains. This model will serve as the centerpiece of an interactive exhibition designed to engage visitors of all ages. Rather than overwhelming visitors with technical jargon, we aim to provide an accessible experience that combines technology and nature. Our exhibition will explore the impact of wind turbines on bird populations and the influence of solar collector systems on microclimates. Visitors will have the opportunity to use scientific equipment to measure water quality and the presence of microplastics. Furthermore, we will offer a virtual reality experience where visitors can immerse themselves in the Neretva valley from the perspective of a bird. As part of the interactive experience, visitors will also participate in a QR code-based quiz, with the chance to win prizes. Ultimately, our goal is to enhance scientific understanding of species, habitats, and ecosystem biodiversity, leveraging tools such as drones and VR technology. Through our project, we aim to promote awareness of conservation, preservation, and sustainable development practices.

The Neretva Delta is a unique landscape in southern Croatia, formed where the Neretva River meets the Adriatic Sea. It's a wetland that's become a haven for wildlife, with over 300 species of birds calling it home.
