CORY CRANE COMPLETED HIS GRADUATE TRAINING AT PURDUE UNIVERSITY BEFORE ACCEPTING PRE AND POSTDOCTORAL APPOINTMENTS AT THE YALE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE AND THE RESEARCH INSTITUTE ON ADDICTIONS WITH THE UNIVERSITY AT BUFFALO, RESPECTIVELY. HE JOINED RIT IN THE FALL OF 2014 WHERE HIS RESEARCH HAS REMAINED FOCUSED ON THE INTERSECTION OF INTIMATE PARTNER VIOLENCE (IPV) AND ADDICTION.
Dr. Crane’s primary research involves developing and evaluating individualized, brief or adjunctive interventions to increase treatment compliance and reduce recidivism rates among clients who use aggression or addictive substances. Interventions include 1) the development of intrinsic motivation to change maladaptive behaviors and 2) integrated digital treatments addressing comorbid conditions that may interfere with attempts to modify violent behavior, such as post-traumatic stress or substance use disorder (SUD). Dr. Crane’s research into prevention involves facilitating critical discussions of partner violence between providers and patients, validating IPV screening measures, and mitigating barriers to treatment. His lab is also involved in research efforts to elucidate proximal moderators of the relationship between alcohol use and physical as well as cyber partner violence using survey, experimental, meta-analytic, and daily reporting methodologies among understudied populations of moderate-to-heavy social drinkers, military veterans, deaf and hard of hearing individuals, and relationship dyads.
In collaboration with Drs. Easton, Berbary, Sangiorgio, and Kalahasthi of RIT Behavioral Health, Dr. Crane’s grant portfolio includes awards from the Health Resources and Services Administration and the VA Office of Rural Health to improve access to mental health resources among rural populations. He is also a co-investigator on two grants from the National Institutes of Health, including a UG3/UH3 to investigate the efficacy of a new digital treatment platform for SUD and an R01 to explore the process of recovery among clients with current and prior SUD diagnoses.
