Rui Li is an Assistant Professor in the GCCIS PhD Program, where he directs the Lab for Use-inspired Computational Intelligence (LUCI).
Dr. Li's research in the areas of statistical machine learning, and its applications in computational biology, medical image understanding, and human behavior modeling. His research explores various aspects of machine learning, particularly Bayesian/probabilistic approaches to modelling and inference in statistical applications. His research work ranges from studying fundamental Bayesian statistical issues: how to characterize the uncertainty in large heterogeneous data, and how to build models and inference techniques that will behave in an expected and desired manner all the way to addressing algorithmic issues: how to enable algorithms to perform competitively against state-of-the-art in big-data applications using resources that scale as linear or sub-linear functions of data size and/or dimensionality. He also works in a broad range of application domains by using machine learning methods to address real-world decision-making scenarios involving health and wellness as well as socio-technical problems about human-AI interaction.
His NSF CAREER award focuses on bridging the gap between large-scale dynamic information and static data analytical models that are incapable of adapting and expanding their capacities. The overall research objective is to propose a unified statistical learning framework to address major challenges posed by incrementally available heterogenous data to information integration and machine intelligence that serve in analyzing and integrating newly produced and existing data, making predictions, testing hypothesis, and decision-making across diverse data-intensive domains and applications. Her collaboration with researchers from multidisciplinary background investigates how to integrate the research in new machine learning curricula design, improve STEM education and educator development, and increase partnerships between academia and industry. He received his PhD in Computing and Information Sciences from RIT in 2013 and started his tenure-track at RIT in 2018.
