RIT Joins Elite 'R2' Ranks for High Research Activity

The recently updated Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Learning now lists RIT as an "R2" institution, placing it among the top 6% of colleges and universities in the nation. Growth in the university's research portfolio is a key driver, along with the increased number of Ph.D. degrees conferred annually.

League, New Space

RIT's winning esports team is joining a highly-competitive national collegiate league commissioned by the Electronic Gaming Federation and moving into a new space specifically designated for esports competitions.

RIT Life Sciences Receives
$1.5 Million Grant

An Empire State Development grant from New York State will expand RIT's research, tech transfer and talent development in life sciences industries. The grant will be used to equip the Genomics Research Lab Cluster, an 8,000 sq. ft. suite of laboratories.

Gene DePrez '61 (FAA),'62 (FAA),'68 MFA (FAA) received the Lake Mohawk Preservation Foundation Award for Outstanding Volunteer Leadership, with his wife, Patty DePrez '76 (CLA). Gene also presented the inaugural Thèrése DePrez Award for Outstanding Production Design honoring his late daughter at the High Falls Women's Film Festival in Rochester.

As co-founder of Frankly Organic Vodka, Kristen Tobin-Risk '90 (SCB) announced that company has gained distribution in Texas and Arizona with expansion plans in 2019. It is the first functional spirit, meaning they use functional ingredients like turmeric root, maca root, wild cherry bark and ginger root. It is USDA Certified Organic, non-GMO, gluten-free, uses no refined sugars, no artificial colors or flavors. Kristen says “Most importantly, Frankly taste delicious. Cheers to a healthy 2019!"

Oscar Gutierrez '91 (GAP), renowned photographer, announced his Nelson Mandela exhibition to celebrate the 100th year of the birth of former president Nelson Mandela in July 1918. His photographs capture Nelson Mandela and other South African luminaries from the initial stages of the negotiations of South Africa's constitution, the first democratic elections and important moments that formed democratic South Africa.

Samantha (Vent) Schreiber '15 (SCB) and Andrew Schreiber '16 (KGCOE) were married on September 29, 2018 in Rochester, NY. Sam and Andrew met in orientation group during their freshman year in 2011. More than 20 members of the RIT family, including faculty, staff, alumni and students, were in attendance.

James R. Gimbi '12 (GCCIS) is serving as a policy advisor for U.S. Senator Rand Paul through the TechCongress Congressional Innovation Fellowship. An initiative of New America's Open Technology Institute, his twelve-month residency bolsters Congress's capacity to handle emerging policy issues by placing technology experts in legislative teams. James handles cybersecurity and intelligence issues.
