RIT hosts young professionals conference

Registration is under way for the Young Professionals in Higher Education Conference, March 25 at Rochester Institute of Technology. The day-long conference aims to provide the region’s young professionals with an opportunity to build skills, network and plan for the next step in their careers.

The professional development conference will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. March 25 in RIT’s Lyndon B. Johnson Hall. Registration is $30 and includes lunch and light refreshments.

Hosted by the RIT Young Professionals and the Young Leaders at University of Rochester, the conference is geared toward young professionals working in higher education.

“The conference theme this year—‘Moving Forward’— is related to how higher education is and has to maintain moving forward in order to satisfy the needs of the changing world around us,” said Katrina Rex, a member of the RIT Young Professionals Executive Board and communications and content manager for RIT Academic Affairs. “We hope this event will provide skills, direction and context for our members, as they make professional decisions about their career.”

The event includes workshops and presentations from respected professionals in higher education. In addition to stories and lessons from presenters, break-out sessions will revolve around engaging with faculty, moving forward with a higher education career, maintaining a work/life balance and negotiation training.

Brian Uzzi, the Richard L. Thomas Professor of Leadership and Organizational Change at the Kellogg School of Management, Northwestern University, will open the conference with a morning keynote presentation. Erica Dhawan, CEO of Cotential, will give the afternoon keynote.

With more than 200 faculty and staff members, the RIT Young Professionals group aims to support the growth and development of RIT employees who are around 40 years old and younger (and those young at heart). The group’s goal is to promote an individualized career-growth plan, provide young professionals the opportunity to engage with the community and to build community among young professionals at RIT.
