Frank Armington

Canadian-born Frank Armington (1876-1941) traveled overseas to Paris to study under Benjamin Constant and Lucien Simon. He returned to Canada with his wife Caroline in 1901 to teach, but moved back to Paris in 1906 where the couple established themselves as etchers and painters. Both were members of the Société Nationale de la Gravure Originale en Noir, Société des Gravures Français, and the American Federation of Arts.

A brougham, a kind of horse-drawn carriage, riding at night in the rain. Both driver and horse have their heads tilted down in a melancholic kind of way, most of the piece is very dark with heavy shading. Off-center towards the right there is a single gas street lamp, just bright enough to illuminate silhouettes of the main figures, as well as a dark figure with an umbrella deep in the background.
