Otto H. Bacher

Painter, etcher, and illustrator Otto H. Bacher (1856-1909) was an early American impressionist. He perfected his etching technique while studying in Munich in the late 1870s. Bacher was a founding member of the Society of Illustrators at its inception in 1901.

A coastal river town depicted with intentional ink strokes, has a structurally close knit village surrounded by a sparse forest. Off-center towards the right of the piece, there is a church whose reflection can be seen in the riverbend. In the sky, that appears to be untouched, there is a faint shadowing above some of the homes to indicate that they’re using their chimneys.
