New director looks to inspire women to take on computing
Tona Henderson has been named director of Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Interactive Games and Media.
Serving as an associate professor in the B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences for 13 years, Henderson is an expert in automated classification, structured markup and women in computing. She has taught a variety of courses for the school, including Introduction to Interactive Media, Web Development and Casual Game Development.
“Tona Henderson brings prior administrative experience, as well as a strong focus on student retention and achievement to the position,” says Andrew Sears, dean of RIT’s B. Thomas Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences. “In addition, her interest in increasing the number of women pursuing computing-oriented careers is a great asset as we ramp up new initiatives in this area.”
Henderson received a bachelor’s in recreation from Southwest Missouri State University and two master’s degrees— a master’s in health care administration and a master’s in library and informational science—from the University of Missouri.
“It’s fitting that throughout my career I have always subscribed to the words of Benjamin Franklin, ‘We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing,’” says Henderson.
