SAPPI Digital Innovation Research
The Sappi - RIT Digital Innovation Lab is an interdisciplinary research lab sponsored by Sappi, the leading global provider of sustainable wood fiber products and biobased solutions.
The lab focuses on developing novel digital technologies, studying the role of digital systems, and investigating the users’ experience of such systems, in the context of the pulp and paper industry and more specifically in the industry’s digital transformation. It is located in the School of Interactive Games and Media, which is housed in the Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences of Rochester Institute of Technology.

People
Konstantinos Papangelis
Prof. Papangelis is an Assistant Professor at the School of Interactive Games and Media of Rochester Institute of Technology. He is the director of the Niantic x RIT Geo Games and Media Lab, team leader of the Jones Lang LaSalle New Media Research Group @ RIT, and team leader of the SAPPI-RIT Digital Innovation Research Group. Prof. Papangelis did his M.Sc, in Human-Computer Interaction at Lancaster University (UK), and his Ph.D. in Computer Science at the University of Aberdeen (UK). He is a fellow of The Royal Society of Arts (RSA; UK) and is heavily involved with the Special Interest Group on Human-Computer Interaction (SIGCHI) of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). His research currently focuses on locative media, extended/hybrid reality, and the metaverse. He has published his work in multiple high-level journals and conferences, such as ACM Transactions on Computer-Human Interaction (TOCHI), Interactive Mobile Wearable and Ubiquitous Technologies (IMWUT), Computer-Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing (CSCW), and Human Factors in Computing Systems (CHI). His research has been supported by foundations, governmental funding bodies, and the industry. He serves on the editorial board of Behaviour & Information Technology Journal (Taylor & Francis).
Dr. Javed Khan
Dr. Javed Khan, is a Senior UX Designer at Sappi Europe. He holds a PhD. from Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), in the Netherlands and a MSc. in Computer Engineering from the University of Patras, in Greece. In the past, he has held the position (tenured) of assistant professor at TU/e's department of Industrial Design and before that of senior lecturer at Breda University of Applied Sciences. Marjorie Boles is Group Chief Information Officer at Sappi Ltd. In the past Ms. Boles occupied the position of Chief Information Officer for Sappi North America, Inc.
Markie Janse van Rensburg
Markie Janse van Rensburg is Global Digital Domain Lead and Chief Information Officer for Sappi South Africa. In the past Markie occupied the position of General Manager: Supply Chain for Sappi South Africa.
Kouris Kalligas
Kouris Kalligas, Head of Digital Transformation at Sappi Europe. Kouris is an entrepreneur at heart, has extensive experience running a startup and has successfully managed software products from creation to launch to getting traction. He has expertise in product management, product marketing, and breaking down big ideas to the smallest possible version.
