We are celebrating Native American Heritage Month at RIT, and you’re invited! Here is a look at some of the upcoming events:
Art, Identity, and Activism: A Conversation with Olivia Maybee
Thursday, November 7 | 5:00 - 6:00 PM | Campus Center Room 2050, PRISM
Join us for a special art presentation by Olivia Maybee, a multimedia artist from the Seneca Nation. Olivia will discuss her creative journey, from traditional Indigenous art to her contemporary expressions of identity and activism. She will also share insights into her design of the Seneca Nation of Indians Pride Flag, promoting inclusivity and representation.
Movie Screening: Killers of the Flower Moon
Friday, November 8 | 6:00 - 9:30 PM | Liberal Arts, Room A205 Lecture Hall
Join us for a special screening of Killers of the Flower Moon, a powerful film directed by Martin Scorsese that explores the true story of the Osage Nation murders in the 1920s and the birth of the FBI. Set against the backdrop of a dark chapter in American history, the film delves into themes of greed, justice, and Indigenous resilience.
After the screening, we will have a brief discussion to reflect on the film’s significance and its connection to contemporary Indigenous issues. This event offers a meaningful opportunity to engage with the complex narratives of Native American history and foster a deeper understanding of Indigenous experiences. This screening is open to all RIT students, faculty, and staff.
Canandaigua Treaty Day
Monday, November 11 | 2:00 PM | Canandaigua, NY
The Canandaigua Treaty Day will honor the historic 1794 treaty reaffirming peace and friendship between the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the U.S. The ceremony will include the annual cloth distribution to the Six Nations.
At 2:00 PM, the Commemoration Ceremony will be held at the Ontario County Courthouse, 27 N. Main Street, Canandaigua, NY. Following the ceremony, participants can view the original treaty at the Ontario County Historical Society, 55 N. Main Street, Canandaigua, NY, until 4:00 PM.Parking: Free public parking is available near the Ontario County Courthouse at the intersection of Ontario St & Pleasant St.
Transportation is provided and limited to the first five students that sign up. Departure Time is 10:00am from the RIT Sentinel.
LAXing and Learning
Friday, November 15 | 7:00 - 9:00 PM | Turf Field next to Gene Polisseni Center
Attendees will partake in activities related to lacrosse and its importance to Indigenous culture. The executive board of the Native American Student Association will give a presentation on the Indigenous origins of lacrosse and the sport’s continued prominence in the culture of the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and other Tribal Nations. Afterwards, attendees will participate in a clinic focusing on teaching some of the basic skills of lacrosse before being given the chance to test their skills in a friendly game. For the safety of attendees, physical contact won’t be allowed during the game.
