By this time next week, our newest Tigers will be in the middle of Orientation and our returning Tigers will be making their way back to campus. We are excited to welcome them all home and start a new academic year at RIT!  

Renaming NRH to Fredericka Douglass Sprague Perry Hall
RIT has renamed Nathaniel Rochester Hall to honor Fredericka Douglass Sprague Perry, a former student, philanthropist, and pioneer in Black children’s welfare. She graduated from the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute, the forerunner of RIT, in 1906. You can read more about Fredericka Douglass Sprague Perry and this name change in this article.

Returning Student Move-In
Returning students living in RIT Housing are not required to make an appointment time in order to pick up their housing keys. These students should plan to arrive in parking lot C, then proceed to 1400 Grace Watson Hall where RIT Housing staff will be available to assist them. Returning students can pick up their keys during the following times:

• August 22-25: 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m.
• August 26-27: 8 a.m.-6 p.m. (subject to change)

Students who live at the RIT Inn or 175 Jefferson should pick up their directly at those locations, not from the Housing office.

TigerFest
We are excited to open the semester with the inaugural TigerFest, a weeklong festival on Aug. 27-Sept. 1 that connects new and returning students to all things RIT. Students can check out the TigerFest website for events, including First Day of Classes Photos, Lighting the Way, Intramural Free Agent Night, and the Tiger Activities Fair, where students can learn about the many clubs and organizations on campus.

Fall University-Wide Career Fair
The Fall Career Fair will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 27. The Career Fair, held in the Gordon Field House, draws a variety of companies, ranging from small tech firms to Fortune 500 companies. Students can prepare using the information and checklist found on the Get Career Fair Ready website.

Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend
Brick City Weekend is on Oct. 13-15. This RIT tradition features events for the whole family and is a great time to visit your student. Family favorite events include: 

• Comedian & SNL Alum Melissa Villaseñor: Melissa Villaseñor is a California-born, multi-talented performer that obliterated a barrier by becoming the first-ever Latina cast member of Saturday Night Live.
• Ritchie’s Runaround: Test your knowledge about RIT, discover hidden gems and favorite spots, and enjoy time with your family all while earning opportunities for prizes.
• No Voice Zone: Experience an RIT tradition and Deaf culture, and learn a few basic signs.
• Women’s Hockey vs. Union: You have two opportunities to cheer on the Women's Hockey as they welcome Union to the Gene Polisseni Center on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
• An Afternoon with Hank Green: With mostly an educational lens, Hank has created engaging content amassing a social media following of over twenty million Nerdfighters who enjoy his ardor for a plethora of tackled subjects.
• Men's Hockey at Blue Cross Arena: RIT’s Men’s Hockey Team takes on Notre Dame in downtown Rochester. Be sure to also check out the free shuttle to downtown from campus.
• Brick City 5K: Take one last lap around the RIT campus before leaving for the weekend.
• And much more!

Kitchen Away From Home Cookbook
We are excited to announce the fourth edition of our Kitchen Away from Home Cookbook!

What is the Kitchen Away From Home Cookbook?
This cookbook is created by YOU—parents and family members of our students—to help our student chefs begin to learn their way around the kitchen. These cookbooks will be on sale later this fall and make a great gift for your student! 

What types of recipes are you looking for?
We are seeking non-intimidating recipes with common ingredients appropriate for students living in a dorm room or apartment. Additionally, we have worked closely with RIT FoodShare to learn about common ingredients found on their shelves to encourage recipes that include these staple. Enter our FoodShare Flavors Recipe Contest OR submit a lunch or dinner recipe, challenging yourself to stay within these parameters: 

• FOODSHARE FLAVORS: Take one of these common RIT FoodShare items below and spice it up using FIVE (or fewer) additional ingredients!
  • Packet of ramen
  • Can of soup
  • Box of mac and cheese
  • Oatmeal
  • Box of cereal
• THINK OUTSIDE THE (LUNCH) BOX: You choose all ingredients, but can only use up to FIVE in your easy-to-make lunch creations.
• ON THE DINNER PLATE: Create a dinner–including a main and a side dish–using up to TEN ingredients total.

Note: oil, salt, and pepper do NOT count towards your total ingredients!

In addition to recipes, we will ask for your best cooking tips and ideas for spicing up a few common food items, including fresh veggies, a box of pasta, a peanut butter sandwich, and oatmeal.

How can I enter the FoodShare Flavors Recipe Contest?
By submitting a recipe in the FoodShare Flavors category, you are automatically entered in a chance to win one of five prizes that will be granted to the top recipes-one for each FoodShare staple.

2023-2024 Academic Calendar
The 2023-2024 Academic Calendar includes all important dates, including breaks. Remember that, along with the academic calendar, your student should refer to their course syllabi for important dates related to their coursework.  

Campus Mailing Addresses
Mailing addresses for all campus locations can be found on the Campus Post Offices website. Please note that the mailing address for students living in the residence halls has changed.

My Bus Home
My Bus Home arranges round-trip and one-way transportation for all academic breaks in private, fully-insured motor coach buses with restrooms, Wi-Fi, and a DVD player. 

The buses pick up on campus and go to/from central locations in:

• Plymouth Meeting and Allentown, PA; Bridgewater, NJ 
• NYC; Jericho and Islandia, Long Island 
• White Plains and Albany, NY 
• Ludlow and Newton, MA; Londonderry, NH 
• Mechanicsburg, PA; Elkridge, MD; Arlington, VA

The estimated round-trip fares are between $219.00 and $269.00 depending on the stop and the number of students who take the bus. A one-way fare is always half of a roundtrip fare. The deadlines to reserve a spot for the upcoming breaks are:

• Fall break: Sept. 10
• Thanksgiving break: Oct. 17
• Winter break home: Nov. 29
• Winter break return: Dec. 26
• Spring break: Feb. 9
• End of year home:  April 14

Parent Poll
Each month, we ask parents to respond to our Parent Poll and provide feedback on a topic related to RIT, your student, and you. In July, we asked what is the primary thing you look for when visiting the RIT parent website. You were fairly well split between resources to support your student’s academic/social life, campus event information, and communications/contact information. Please take a moment to answer our August question.
