Kitchen Away From Home Cookbook—Recipes Needed We are excited to announce the fourth edition of our Kitchen Away from Home Cookbook! This cookbook is created by YOU—parents and family members of our students—to help our student chefs begin to learn their way around the kitchen. These cookbooks will be on sale later this fall and make a great gift for your student.
We are currently seeking recipes in the following categories:
- FOODSHARE FLAVORS*: Take one of these common RIT FoodShare items below and spice it up using FIVE (or fewer) additional ingredients!
- Packet of ramen
- Can of soup
- Box of mac and cheese
- Oatmeal
- Box of cereal
- THINK OUTSIDE THE (LUNCH) BOX: You choose all ingredients, but can only use up to FIVE in your easy-to-make lunch creations.
- ON THE DINNER PLATE: Create a dinner–including a main and a side dish–using up to TEN ingredients total.
*FoodShare Flavors submissions will automatically be entered in a chance to win one of five prizes that will be granted to the top recipes-one for each FoodShare staple.
In addition to recipes, we will ask for your best cooking tips and ideas for spicing up a few common food items, including fresh veggies, a box of pasta, a peanut butter sandwich, and oatmeal.

Career Fair Clothing at Bern’s Closet In order to prepare for the Fall University-Wide Career Fair
on Sept. 27, students can visit Bern’s Closet to find career-ready clothing. Bern’s Closet is a service through the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement which provides clothing for RIT community members in need of professional clothing and winter clothing. Items available include suits, dress shirts, blouses, dress pants, jackets, and shoes, as well as winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves.
Bern’s Closet is a great resource for your students who might need clothing to wear to the Career Fair or for interviews. It is located within the RIT FoodShare Center at 113 Kimball Drive in the Riverknoll apartments on campus, near Global Village. Appointments are available for sign-up on the Bern’s Closet website and are recommended though walk-ins are welcome.
ROAR Day ROAR Day—RIT’s most philanthropic 24 hours—is on Sept. 28. ROAR Day helps fuel the future of RIT and makes inspirational experiences possible for our students. You can direct dollars to the people and places that mean the most to you: scholarships, student life, academics, athletics, performing arts, research, diversity, entrepreneurship, and more. Throughout the day, there will be giving challenges with opportunities to increase the impact of your gift. For more details, to make a gift, or to become a ROAR Day Ambassador and earn VIP swag, visit the ROAR Day website.
Change of Major Fair The Change of Major Fair is an opportunity for students to learn about the available majors on campus and the resources offered to change majors. Representatives from all nine colleges, Career Counseling, and the School of Individualized Study will be at the fair to talk with students about their options. The Change of Major Fair is on Tuesday, Oct. 3 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Student Alumni Union (SAU), Fireside Lounge. Students can register on CampusGroups.
Immersion and Minor Fair Immersions are a required portion of the general education curriculum for every undergraduate student at RIT. The Immersion and Minor Fair offers students a chance to explore options and connect with faculty teaching in areas of interest. Faculty from the College of Liberal Arts, College of Science, College of Art and Design, and Golisano College of Computing and Information Sciences will be available to answer questions and share information about immersion, minor, and double major offerings. The fair will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 18 from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. in the Student Alumni Union (SAU), Fireside Lounge.

Academics—Feedback and Alerts This is a common time in the semester for faculty to begin offering feedback to students about course performance. Many, but not all, use the Starfish system, which allows instructors to offer feedback in the form of alerts or kudos. It is also a convenient way for students to schedule an appointment with their advisor. Parents are important supporters of students’ academic success, and you can encourage your student to pay attention to feedback and meet with their advisor and professors as needed.
Conversation starters
- What types of feedback have you been getting about your coursework? Have you received any Starfish alerts or kudos? Any other communication from instructors?
- Have you talked with your instructor and academic advisor about any recommendations they have for you?
- What strategies are you using to be successful in your classes?
- Where will you seek help if you are struggling in a class?
Campus Engagement— Into the ROC Into the ROC
gives students the opportunity to explore the unique challenges, cultural treasures, and diverse communities in the greater Rochester area. Participants have the opportunity to spend time getting to know Rochester through volunteering, attending unique events, and learning about the people who have historically and presently call Rochester home. Upcoming Into the ROC events include CollegeFest, RocVentures Climbing College Night, Harry Potter at the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, and more! Interested students can register on the Center of Leadership and Civic Engagement Campus Groups page.
Conversation starters
- What experiences outside of the classroom are you hoping to have while a student?
- What about the city of Rochester is interesting to you (e.g., food scene, history, museums, festivals)?
- Are there specific areas in which you feel you can give back to the RIT and Rochester communities?
Campus Living—Roommates Meeting a new roommate in August is very exciting for most students. Over time, the novelty can wear off and conflicts can arise. This typically will subside over time as roommates learn how to live with one another. As a parent, you should support your student by listening and helping them think of strategies to handle their roommate relationship, but let them handle their own roommate conflicts or with the help of an RA.
Conversation starters
- How are you and your roommate compromising about how you use your space?
- What do you and your roommate do together for fun?
- What is your RA like? How have you been meeting other people on your floor?
Wellness—Insurance Reminder RIT expects all students to have health insurance. Health insurance coverage ensures that your student receives the appropriate medical care in the event of an injury or illness that requires prescription medication, a referral to a specialist, or even hospitalization. Health insurance may be obtained through the university,
or through family or individual policies.
If your student will use a family plan, please contact the company to determine what coverage your student has in Rochester, as many companies have limited out-of-network coverage. If your student currently has insurance through a Medicaid based plan, please know that most Medicaid based insurance plans only provide emergency-level coverage outside of the area they are issued in. If your student will not be on a family plan, RIT offers a robust student health insurance plan
with an expansive provider network across the U.S. and out-of-network benefits. Learn more about health insurance requirements here.
Conversation Starters
- Do you have a copy of your insurance card/know where the copy is?
- What questions do you have about how health insurance works?
- Are you aware of what services the Student Health Center provides?

Updates to FAFSA There are some important changes coming to the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The Department of Education is simplifying the FAFSA. Due to the changes, the 2024-2025 FAFSA will not be available on the traditional Oct. 1 opening date. The anticipated launch date for the 2024-2025 FAFSA is December 2023. RIT is working to provide updates and resources to assist in the FAFSA process as they become available.
New Family Survey 2023 For families who have new RIT students and participated in summer and Welcome Days programming: please take a moment to fill out our 2023 New Family Survey. If you attended Welcome Days—or even if you didn’t—please take a moment and give us your feedback. This information is valuable as we look to future programming.
If you are NOT the parent of a new student, please do not take this survey. You will have the opportunity this spring to share your feedback in the 2024 RIT Parent Survey!
Brick City Homecoming and Family Weekend Brick City Weekend is on Oct. 13-15. This RIT tradition features events for the whole family and is a great time to visit your student. Family favorite events include:
- Comedian & SNL Alum Melissa Villaseñor: Melissa Villaseñor is a California-born, multi-talented performer that obliterated a barrier by becoming the first-ever Latina cast member of Saturday Night Live.
- Ritchie’s Runaround: Test your knowledge about RIT, discover hidden gems and favorite spots, and enjoy time with your family all while earning opportunities for prizes.
- No Voice Zone: Experience an RIT tradition and Deaf culture, and learn a few basic signs.
- Women’s Hockey vs. Union: You have two opportunities to cheer on the Women's Hockey as they welcome Union to the Gene Polisseni Center on Friday evening and Saturday afternoon.
- An Afternoon with Hank Green: With mostly an educational lens, Hank has created engaging content amassing a social media following of over twenty million Nerdfighters who enjoy his ardor for a plethora of tackled subjects.
- Men's Hockey at Blue Cross Arena: RIT’s Men’s Hockey Team takes on Notre Dame in downtown Rochester. Be sure to also check out the free shuttle to downtown from campus.
- Brick City 5K: Take one last lap around the RIT campus before leaving for the weekend.
- And much more!
Registration is now open! Information, events, and registration can be found on the Brick City Weekend website.
Religious Holidays Accommodations Fall is a season of many holidays for those of Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jewish, Muslim, and Pagan traditions, in addition to many others. These holidays may be important events for your student. Please note that RIT’s attendance policy does not automatically excuse absences for religious reasons, but students can make arrangements with professors ahead of time if they must miss class. For more information about spring holidays, visit the Spirituality and Religious Life page.
New Shuttle Tracking App RIT Parking and Transportation has a new app to track RIT’s shuttle system. Passio GO! replaces the TransLoc app previously used to track our shuttle system in real-time. Please remind your student to download the app through Google Play
or Apple App Store.
Parent Poll Each month, we ask parents to respond to our Parent Poll and provide feedback on a topic related to RIT, your student, and you. In August, we asked what makes RIT unique to your family. More than half of you (54%) responded the co-op experience. Another 28% responded RIT’s academic reputation. Please take a moment to answer our September question.
