Tiger's Tale

December 2022

'Tis the Season

Graduates walking on campus

Let this giving season bring out the giver in all of us.

RIT is just one community comprised of thousands. Whichever college you studied at, your major, your graduation year, or if you're a student, alum, faculty, staff, or friend, we all are one RIT!

At the end of this calendar year, reflect on your connection to RIT and the support you've received from being a part of this dynamic and amazing community. We encourage you to kindle that flame of support with a gift to benefit our current students

Alumni Book Club

Can you believe it? A new year is fast approaching, and we have just the resolution for you: Read More Books!

In the spirit of new beginnings and goal-setting, we invite you to join the RIT Alumni Book Club! Connecting through a private, free, online discussion forum, the group spends eight weeks reading each book and finishes five books a year. As a book club member, you often get to vote on the books we read, and the reading periods often culminate with a Livestream Author Talk.

Our first book of 2023 will be Horse by Pultizer Prize winner Geraldine Brooks, and we are thrilled that she will join us for an Author Talk on March 7.

Be sure to register before we start our reading journey on January 6! We hope you will join us

Year-End Tax Saving Strategies

Two people working on a drone

As 2022 comes to a close, so does your ability to lower your taxes. A little planning now can save time and money later. Consider these tax-saving strategies before December 31:

Charitable Contributions:

  • Outright Gift of Cash: Make an immediate impact and take an income tax deduction (if you itemize)

  • Stocks and Bonds: Donate appreciated securities and avoid capital gains tax. Also receive an income tax deduction for the full value of the stock. The after-tax cost is lower than donating cash.

  • Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD): If you are age 70 ' or older, you can make a tax-free gift from your traditional IRA to RIT. A QCD gift before December 31will not be included in your 2022 taxable income; if you are 72 or older it will be applied to your Required Minimum Distribution (RMD). Very smart.

  • Donor Advised Fund: Create future flexibility for yourself. Receive a 2022 tax deduction with a contribution to a DAF before year-end, but delay the decision to direct the distributions to your favorite charities.1You determine the timetable.

  • Charitable Gift Annuity: A gift to RIT that first provides lifetime income to you and/or a loved one. You receive (1) fixed payments that protect against future inflation and market volatility; (2) an immediate income tax deduction that can be carried forward up to five years; and (3) tax-free payments for a specified number of years.

Gifts in Action

Lia Grammer BS '25 is excited about all the unique opportunities that packaging science, her field of study, provides for college graduates. Even during her freshman year at RIT, she was a part of an invitation-only packaging competition, worked as a teaching assistant, served as an e-board member and social media coordinator for the student chapter of the Institute of Packaging Professionals, and was a member of the Society of Asian Scientists and Engineers. None of this would have been possible without the scholarship funding she received.

Students walking on campus

The Early Decision II deadline is right around the corner...

Alumni like you play an important role in recruiting future Tigers by recommending RIT to prospective students within your families, communities, and professional networks. And now that role is even more valuable!

Did you know, when you refer a prospective student to RIT, that student is eligible for the RIT Alumni Referral Award, a $1,000 per year scholarship renewable for four years? Each alum can refer one undergraduate applicant per year for this award.
