SD-CoMETS Scholars - John Jones
My name is John Paul Jones II and I come from a small town in New York called Port Jervis. I am currently a first year computer engineering technology student at RIT. I chose my major mainly because it’s something that brings me happiness learning and creating in that field and also it’s something to make my parents proud. I knew what I wanted to be and what I wanted to study before I applied for it and I knew RIT was the perfect fit for me. In addition to the support from RIT, I believe SD-CoMETS will also be very beneficial in helping me achieve my goals and dreams. The available mentorship and specific individual support is going to be very helpful as my college life unfolds.
I graduated from Port Jervis High School where I mainly focus on academics, receiving multiple awards for my work but not much for extracurricular activities and sports. To make up for it I devoted every single summer to my local YMCA in Huguenot and events related to it. I was originally a camper but I became very involved in the camp so I was asked to be a camp counselor. During my time as a counselor there was a program called YMCA leaders. In that program we did many social events with the community and donations.
Here at RIT has been a bit stressful but I’m getting the hang of the flow around here. I’m heavily involved in the gaming clubs they have here and I’m even on the Apex Legends esports team. It such a big campus so it’s nice to get the chance to walk around and check out what’s happening. I see myself finding something in the computer engineering field, not sure yet but with the help of SD-CoMETS program I’m sure I’ll find a career for me.
