Engineering Professor Co-Authors New Book on Resilience Engineering

Dr. Andres Kwasinski, professor in the department of computer engineering and director of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Ph.D. program, is the co-author of a new book titled “Resilience Engineering for Power and Communications Systems: Networked Infrastructure in Extreme Events”, published by Cambridge University Press.

Power and communications networks are the backbone of our Information Age society but they are susceptible to disruption by natural or man-made events. When a natural disaster strikes a region of the world, electricity and communications become of critical need, but unfortunately power and communication networks see themselves knock out of service due to the direct or indirect effects of the same disruptive event. The book is a comprehensive presentation of network theory, data networking, reliability, and resilience, and of the strategies, technologies and tools to improve power and information and communication network (ICN) resilience. The book draws from twenty years of experience in networking and critical infrastructure disaster resilience research, including National Science Foundation-sponsored projects, and includes real-world case-studies of power grid and ICN performance and recovery during earthquakes, wildfires, tsunamis, and other natural disasters; as well as man-made disasters.

The book is co-authored by Dr. Alexis Kwasinski, an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh and twin brother of Dr. Andres Kwasinski, and with Dr. Vaidyanathan Krishnamurthy, a reliability data scientist at Ørsted A/S.
