Joshua Rashaad McFadden to deliver keynote address at RIT’s Let Freedom Ring celebration

The annual event commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. takes place virtually on Monday, Jan. 18

Joshua Rashaad McFadden, an assistant professor in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences in RIT’s College of Art and Design, will headline the fourth annual Let Freedom Ring celebration.

RIT’s 2021 Let Freedom Ring event commemorating Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day will feature a keynote address by a faculty member whose work photographing protests against racial injustice has gained national attention. Joshua Rashaad McFadden, an assistant professor in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences in RIT’s College of Art and Design, will headline the fourth annual celebration. The event is free and open to members of the RIT community, taking place on Zoom from 11 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 18.

McFadden is an American visual artist whose primary medium is photography. He explores the use of archival material within his work and is known for his portraiture. He also conceptually investigates themes related to identity, masculinity, history, race, and sexuality.

The title of McFadden’s talk is “A Moment in a Movement.” He has been on the frontlines photographing demonstrations related to the Black Lives Matter movement since the 2015 protests in Selma, Ala. His work covering demonstrations as well as the funerals of George Floyd, Rayshard Brooks, and others has been featured in national outlets including CNN and The New York Times.

“We are delighted to feature a member of our own faculty ranks whose art and photojournalism has been making such an impact at the national level,” said Keith Jenkins, RIT’s vice president and associate provost for diversity and inclusion. “Although we cannot celebrate the holiday together in person, this event will provide a wonderful opportunity to reflect on King’s legacy and how his work continues to resonate today.”

Patrick Edwards, a third-year economics student from North Haven, Conn., will serve as the MC for the event. Edwards currently serves as president of RIT’s ALANA Collegiate Association.

ASL Interpreters will be provided. To register for the event, visit the RIT Events website.
