2 Active Classroom, Printing Press Museum, Music Ensemble Studio

This large-scale active classroom will provide seating for up to 120 students in a space designed to promote and facilitate technology-enabled learning that incorporates collaboration, creativity, communication, and critical thinking in a student-centered environment. (4,500 sf)

The Cary Collection Research Center will be a dynamic, active research and teaching space with a reception area, reading and research room, and photo lab for digitization. The space will also host the historic Albion No. 6551 iron hand press, by English designer William Morris, on display behind a new glass wall that will mirror the glass wall of the RIT Press. (1,700 sf)

The Music Ensemble Studio - named the Munson Music Loft - provides an impressive space for performing arts groups to learn, create and rehearse, and offers a panoramic view of the center of campus. (1,860 sf)

The working presses in this makerspace come from the Cary Graphics Arts Collection and will be available for hands-on learning and student projects. (770 sf)

Located in the former Cary Collection Reading Room, the main walkway between the SHED and the Wallace Library will house the Printing Press Museum. This permanent display will feature six printing presses that document the evolution of the printing press from its mid-15th-century origins in Mainz, Germany to the middle of the 20th century. Accompanying each press will be an interpretive panel, supplying information about the press, its cultural history, and its relationships to RIT and the Cary Collection. (1,370 sf)

With spectacular views of the Atrium and Makers' Courtyard below, as well as direct views into the third floor maker spaces, this lobby and seating area will become a fast favorite for students, faculty and staff. (~2,000 sf)

The Jeff and Nina Benck Makerspace will be used for the exploration and development of new ideas in wearable technology as well as other design innovations. (1,600 sf)

The Cary Workroom will be used extensively by students from across disciplines for activities, such as for collections processing, preparing exhibits, conservation of artifacts, and preparation of objects to be loaned for exhibition. (480 sf)

The Library Instruction Lab is a premier teaching space primarily used by librarians who support the colleges and global campuses. This flexible, interactive space will also play host to workshops, seminars, and pop-up programming across disciplines including the Cary Collection and RIT Archives. Accessibility technology will be incorporated into the design of the space to accommodate the needs of deaf and hard-of-hearing students. After hours, the space may be used for additional academic support programming, as well. (1,060 sf)

The Davenport-Hatch Foundation Makerspace will be used for teams working on projects that will solve real-world problems and enhance RIT students' competencies around healthcare and accessibility, and other pressing needs. (960 sf)
