Archie Comics co-CEO to give Earth Day talk

School of Individualized Study hosts ‘Advocacy Through Comics’ with Nancy Silberkleit

Nancy Silberkleit will discuss Archie, environmental outreach and how comics can change the world during a talk Wednesday hosted by RIT’s School of Individualized Study.

Even Archie Comics is getting on the bandwagon during Earth Week celebrations at Rochester Institute of Technology.

The public is invited to join Nancy Silberkleit, co-CEO of Archie Comics, for a conversation about Archie, environmental outreach and how comics can change the world. The event, sponsored by RIT’s School of Individualized Study, will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesday, April 19, at University Gallery, located in James E. Booth Hall.

Archie Comic Publications is one of the most successful, longest-running brands in the history of the comic industry. Silberkleit will discuss the comic “Getting Drastic in Plastic,” published in time for Earth Day in Archie’s Funhouse Double Digest #26, and her work in comics outreach.

The conversation will be moderated by comics scholar Daniel Worden, faculty in RIT’s School of Individualized Study. “We’re thrilled that Nancy Silberkleit is visiting RIT during Earth Week,” he said. “Archie Comics are a touchstone of global culture today; they are instantly recognizable and have defined adolescent life for generations.

“Using Archie and her Rise Above Social Issues Foundation as platforms, Nancy has made it clear how comics can change our world for the better. She has produced a number of exciting comics about vital issues today, from plastics recycling to anti-bullying. I look forward to hosting her on campus so that the RIT and Rochester communities can learn more about her work, her amazing life story, and how comics can contribute to progressive change.”
