The Student Alumni Union lobby was filled with art and excited chatter during the RIT Zine Fest on March 31. The event, hosted by the College of Liberal Arts journalism program and RIT Libraries, featured a variety of artists from the RIT community, as well as a few regional zine vendors.

During the event, attendees learned more about the subculture around creating and sharing zines—which are typically small-circulation, self-published works reproduced via photocopies. There were also over a dozen vendors with work available to purchase, as well as two booths with free zines created by RIT students for class projects.

The zines on view covered a variety of topics. Some topics were more serious, like one’s relationship with food or the culture shock of being a minority student at a predominantly white institution. Other topics played with whimsy and silliness, like the zine above about a Sonic the Hedgehog ice cream with gumball eyes.

A hallmark of zine culture is the vibrant community it creates. Vendors and attendees forged connections with each other, and everyone at the event left with an invigorated love for creating. To learn how to get involved with the RIT zine community, email Professor Hinda Mandell at hbmgpt@rit.edu.
