Dr. James J. DeCaro, Director of PEN-International and E. William Clymer, Associate Director, provided the opening presentation to Accessible Distance Learning Technologies conference, offered by the Oklahoma ABLE Tech and Maine Consumer Information and Technology Training exchange and National Assistive Technology Technical Assistance Partnership. The conference took place in Portland, Maine. Their paper, titled "Overview of the State of the Art in Accessible Distance Learning," included a live video conference call to the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), a PEN-International partner in Manila, Philippines. Ms. Theresa De la Torre, Director of the program for the deaf at CSB demonstrated videoconferencing strategies that have proven successful in the Philippines and then responded to questions from the audience in Maine.
Besides the video conference with the Philippines, additional topics included the history of PEN-International, the use of access technologies and strategies by PEN-International partners and concluded with an overview of an NTID project entitled "The Summit to Create a Cyber-Community to Advance Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Individuals in STEM (DHH Cyber-Community)" which occurred on June 25-27, 2008 on the campus of the Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT).
