The Postsecondary Education Network-International was named a 2006 Education and Academia Laureate by the Computerworld Honors Program. The award, given by the Computerworld Information Technology Awards Foundation, recognizes organizations that use information technology to promote positive social, economic, and educational change. On June 5, 2006, Dr. James J. DeCaro and RIT Vice President T. Alan Hurwitz attended the Award Ceremonies at the Andrew W. Mellon Auditorium in Washington D.C. The Class of 2006 was one of the Program's largest, most diverse groups in recent history (see the PEN case study). PEN-International competed against 29 other Laureates in the education category for the prestigious Computerworld 21st Century Achievement Award. While PEN was not selected as the winner, DeCaro noted that, "To be recognized by Computerworld as a Laureate is enough of an honor. This award is a shared achievement that reflects the commitment of RIT, our partner universities around the globe, and The Nippon Foundation of Japan."
