PEN has taken the lead for NTID, in collaboration with Hungarian Ambassador to the USA, His Excellency A. Simonyi, in developing a scholarship program for deaf Hungarians to study at NTID. To this end, RIT Vice President T. Alan Hurwitz led a delegation to Hungary to meet with government officials to seek support for a scholarship program. The delegation included J. J. DeCaro , PEN-International, E. Toth, Budapest School for the Deaf, and G. Horvath, Hungarian journalist.
The delegation met with Dr. Kinga Goncz, Minister of Child, Youth and Equal Opportunities. In the course of the discussions Dr. Goncz committed to providing 1 million Hungarian Forints each for two scholarships for capable Hungarian deaf men and women to attend NTID.
The delegation also met with the Political State Secretary of the Ministry of Economy and Transportation, Mr. Gabor Diossy. Mr. Diossy indicated his support for the proposal to create scholarships. He also indicated his willingness to help seek funds for the scholarships from business and industry in Hungary, as well as from the Ministry of Economy and Transportation.
Finally, PEN-International agreed to host a high-level Hungarian delegation for a study tour in the USA. The delegation will explore and investigate postsecondary deaf education at RIT and visit PEN-International.
