On 16 March, the results of a two-year study conducted in the Peoples' Republic of China regarding postsecondary education in the country were presented to the leadership of the China Disable Persons' Federation. The research was a first-of-a-kind study of postsecondary education for deaf men and women in China. A total of 38 college faculty members and administrators, deaf college students, leaders of the deaf community and leaders of the China Disabled Persons' Federation (CDPF) participated in the research study. The results of the study are contained in an Executive Summary of the report entitled, "Postsecondary Education of Deaf People in China: Issues, Roles, Responsibilities and Recommendations."
The full report was received by Mr. Wang Xinxian, Vice Chairman of the CDPF on 16 March. The report was presented to Mr. Wang by a delegation representing PEN-International: Patricia A. Mudgett-DeCaro and James J. DeCaro (report authors), Dr. T. Alan Hurwitz (representing RIT), Mr. Y. Ishii (representing The Nippon Foundation) and Mr. G. Bao (representing PEN-China). Also attending the meeting for PEN-China were Directors Qu and Wang of Beijing Union University and Changchun University respectively.
At the conclusion of the presentation of the report, Mr. Wang indicated the importance of the report to the CDPF and indicated that the CDPF would help guarantee that PEN-International continues to develop smoothly in China. As a follow-up to the meeting, a delegation from the CDPF will conduct a study tour at PEN-International in May. During the visit there will be in-depth discussions as regards the recommendations contained in the report.
