James J. DeCaro, Director, E. William Clymer, Associate Director of PEN-International, visited the Centre for Sign Linguistics & Deaf Studies, Department of Linguistics and Modern Languages at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The primary agenda was to review progress on the development of sign language resources, provide training on the use of online resources for offering sign language instruction and to review technical support and classroom technology necessary to provide training to regional deaf community members on the documentation of local sign languages.
The Nippon Hong Kong Deaf Students of the CSLDS provided a through presentation and demonstration of the teaching materials and course development systems used at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. The status of each of the three books and related materials were presented and demonstrated. Additionally, an electronic sign dictionary and other training protocols were reviewed. The afternoon meetings focused on the technology requirements of labs and classrooms that are being renovated at the Centre to accommodate the planned arrival of local sign language experts to receive training in the documentation and production of regional sign language resources. Smart Classroom technologies; computer networking and videoconference technologies were discussed in great detail.
At the conclusion of the meetings, it was decided that a delegation of 5 members of the Centre's team would be invited to NTID to receive training on instructional technology and production techniques, along with smart classroom and networking design. The tentative date for this training is September 15 -22, 2007.
