On 24 January and 7 February 2007, PEN-International conducted two teleconferences between NTID and the College of St. Benilde, Manila, Philippines. The two-hour teleconferences, designed to be a two-part series, focused on teaching mathematics to deaf and hard of hearing postsecondary students. The presenters were Vince Daniele, chair of the mathematics and science department at NTID, and Joan Carr, faculty member in NTID's mathematics department.
The objectives for the training sessions were: to discuss the design of mathematics courses for deaf and hard of hearing students, to describe and compare various classroom presentation options, to explore various visual strategies for presenting and solving mathematical problems, to develop and appreciation for the way in which spoken and signed language impacts the teaching and learning of mathematics, and to identify ways that scientific calculators can motivate and enhance student learning, and finally, to discuss the role of tutoring and other support services in supporting mathematics instruction.
A total of six deaf and hearing faculty and staff members from CSB participated in the teleconferences. Attached are photos and PDF files of the Powerpoint presentation and supporting materials.
