More than 100 individuals attended the Grand Opening and Dedication of the new PEN-International Learning Center at the De La Salle College of Saint Benilde on March 6, 2006. This lab, designed by the faculty, staff and students of the School of Deaf Education and Applied Studies, supplements the PEN-International Multimedia Laboratory dedicated in 2003. This lab provides students and faculty with a 25-station computer lecture and lab facility, a resource room, and suites that can be used for digital video production and other sophisticated digital imagery manipulation. Additional facilities will be used for sign language and interpreter training.
Prior to the dedication of the new learning center, James J. DeCaro received the De La Salle Brothers of the Philippine District Medallion for his contributions to deaf education in the Philippines. Additionally, seven Philippine organizations that have worked closely with the deaf community in the Philippines were recognized as were 10 individuals from the Manila area for their contributions to deaf education and employment of deaf persons.
Those in attendance also were entertained by deaf dancers from the college. After the official dedication and opening, the capabilities of the new learning center were demonstrated.
