On 6 February 2007, Dr. Denise Kavin of PEN-International conducted a presentation titled "Cultural Issues in Community Interpreting", for 8 students enrolled in an Interpreter Training Program class at NTID/RIT. During this 1.5 hour presentation, she discussed her personal, academic and professional experiences with interpreting, and shared her own personal observation of cultural issues that may emerge in community interpreting situations. She also touched on topics such as audism, the helper model, differences in cultural issues and values, variations within the deaf community, and communication styles. The students in the class were third and fourth year bachelor-level interpreting majors.
