A Teacher Education Institute was held at NTID June 1- 23, 2010, for 12 secondary school teachers of deaf students in Viet Nam and the Philippines. Dr. James Woodward and Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, who have worked successfully with secondary deaf students in Dong Nai, led the Vietnamese delegation. Classes offered at the Institute included practical as well as theoretical issues fundamental to teaching deaf students. In addition to teaching methods classes-both general methods and specific methods for teaching various subject areas-classes were offered in psychology, language acquisition, and audition. On weekends, the group visited Mendon Ponds Park, the Erie Canal, and the Rochester Museum and Science Center. These field trips were used as reference points for the general methods classes as well as for the practice teaching episodes presented by the participants during the last days of the institute.
The Teacher Education Institute was organized by Nora Shannon, senior project associate and Mary Lamb, project associate. Presenters included: Gerald Bateman, Joan Carr, Karen Christie, Vince Daniele, Carol De Filippo, Sybil Ishman, Bryan Lloyd, Matthew Lynn, Patricia Mudgett-DeCaro, and Annmarie Ross.
