Presented by Michael Leroy Oberg, Ph.D.--Author and Distinguished Professor of History, Geneseo State University of NY
In Canandaigua, New York, 11/11 is Treaty Day, an annual commemoration of the treaty the Six Nations of the Iroquois signed with the United States in 1794. The event includes a parade from the Canandaigua Primary School to the County Court House lawn, a commemoration ceremony, vendors and displays, and speakers at the primary school. The school site itself is significant because a large number of the 1,600 Native Americans who attended the treaty council between September and November in 1794 camped on land that ultimately became the school's play fields. Professor Oberg will discuss the importance of this treaty and its role in today's relationship with Native Americans in our area.
