Bio

Cliff Devries enters his 20th year as the diving coach for the Tigers in 2021-22. In that time, he has coached eight All-Americans, and has a host of divers in the mix for All-American honors.

In 2018, Devries was awarded the prestigious Richard E. Steadman Award by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America. He became the first diving coach to win the hallowed award, given annually to a swimming or diving coach in high school, club, or university ranks who, in the opinion of the International Swimming Hall of Fame, Inc. the CSCAA Forum, and the CSCAA, has done the most to spread happiness in Coach Steadman's beloved sport of swimming and diving.

In 2016, Natalie Snyder became RIT’s first female All-American diver, placing fifth in the 1-meter event at the NCAA Championship, and the first regional diving champion. She was also a CoSIDA Academic All-America selection.

Under his tutelage, divers Quinn Donahoe and Matt Joseph earned All-American honors in 2007 and 2008. In 2011, Evan Wendt earned All-American honors in both the 1-and 3-meter diving, and was the Upper New York State Athletic Conference Diver of the Year, re-writing the state and RIT records books. In 2013, John Tellgren garnered All-American accolades in both the 1- and 3-meter events in 2013, while Matt DePalo was an honorable mention All-American in 2014.

Devries was named the Upper New York State Athletic Conference Diving Coach of the Year in 2007, 2008, 2011, 2015 and 2016.

Sam Huselstein, an honorable mention All-American, re-wrote the RIT diving record book in 2014, smashing all four school marks. In 2015, Natalie Snyder broke Huselstein’s records in both 1-meter events.

Once again, Devries has a handful of talented divers looking to secure a berth in the 2019 NCAA Championship.

It is Devries’ second stint with RIT. From 1999 to 2002, he led RIT on the diving board, earning Upper New York State Athletic Conference Diving Coach of the Year honors in 2000 and 2002.

After a three-year hiatus, Devries returned to lead the Tiger divers in 2005. Devries has a tremendous amount of experience, having coached in the Rochester area for the last two decades. Devries began his coaching career at Monroe Community College, serving as the founder of the Maverick Dive Club. After his stints at MCC and RIT, Devries was the diving coach at the University of Rochester.

Devries graduated from RIT with a bachelor’s degree in accounting in 2002.

He currently is the director for Upstate New York Diving, the largest diving club in New York.
