RIT Production Services’ work honored

RIT Production Services’ Web/IT Group was honored at the 8th annual W3 Awards for the RIT SportsZone app, left, and the Kate Gleason College of Engineering website redesign.

RIT Production Services team has added to its growing collection of awards and accolades for the SportsZone app, the online connection to RIT’s sports programming. It was one of two of the organization’s Web services recognized at the 8^th annual W3 ceremony this fall, and the team was presented Silver Awards in its Best of the Web competition. More than 4,000 entries from around the country were submitted for this year’s event sponsored by the International Academy of the Visual Arts.

Winners were the RIT SportsZone app and the Kate Gleason College of Engineering website redesign project. RIT Production Services’ Web/IT Group, the technical and creative support team providing Web development, coordinated both design projects.

“Two of our Web projects were recognized by W3 last year, so it is great to get continued recognition from them this year as well. It’s a testament to the immense talent that we have internally at RIT,” said Raman Bhalla, assistant director, Web/IT services.

The SportsZone app includes episodes from the television program of the same name featuring stories on student-athletes, coaches, clubs and events on campus. It is a collaboration between ESPN, Time Warner Cable and RIT.

W3 recognized the app for its media streaming capabilities, photo and video elements and as an outstanding sports and recreation site. Contributors include Bhalla; Harry Groover, Web programmer; and Megan Bastian, designer. Additional accolades for the app include 2013 College Emmy, Telly, ADDY, PRism and College Television Awards.

The new College of Engineering website was honored for its homepage design, the structure and navigation of the site as well as its visual appeal. Undergoing a complete redesign in the past academic year, the site incorporates multiple carousel images and stories of student and faculty work, separate informational sections for prospective students and corporate partners, testimonials as well as in-depth information about majors and programs offered in the college. Contributors for the site include: Bhalla; Bastian; David Pedu, Web programmer; and Karen Ester, communications specialist in the Kate Gleason College of Engineering.

W3 Awards recognize the creative and marketing professionals behind organizational websites, videos and marketing programs, and are sanctioned by the International Academy of the Visual Arts. Members of the organization from media, advertising and marketing judge the competition.
