RIT hosts Earth Day celebration Tuesday

Student competition, industry speakers and K-12 student poster competition on tap at RIT

WHAT: Third annual Research & Development Student Competition featuring 13 teams from nine universities throughout New York state, including Rochester Institute of Technology, RPI, Clarkson and Syracuse University. Event also includes industry speakers and a K-12 student competition poster competition as part of Earth Day celebration at RIT.

WHERE: Golisano Institute for Sustainability, Rochester Institute of Technology

WHEN: 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 22 (Earth Day)

WHO: Sponsored by the New York State Pollution Prevention Institute (NYSP2I)

As part of its Research and Development Program, NYSP2I challenged teams of full-time students enrolled at any institute of higher education in New York state to identify a specific activity at their university or in their community with a large environmental footprint. Teams were then required to design innovative solutions to reduce the issue’s impact. Teams are competing by undergraduate or graduate level under the theme “Greenovate NYS.”

The event’s scheduled speakers will include:

  • Bill Destler, RIT president
  • Nabil Nasr, associate provost and director of the Golisano Institute for Sustainability
  • Enid Cardinal, senior sustainability advisor to the president, RIT
  • Victoria Deyoung, strategic projects manager, Xerox
  • Dr. Tomas McHugh, general manager, Materials Technology and Business Development, Eastman Kodak Co.
  • Amy R. Butler, vice president, Global Environment, Health, Safety and Sustainability, Bausch + Lomb
  • Dr. Stephen Hung, project leader and principal engineer, General Electric Resource Efficiency Program

In addition, the Earth Day event will include a “flash mob” performance by RIT’s Brick City Singers in the GIS atrium at 11 a.m., GIS building tours, and a presentation of the Pixar movie WALL-E, with free popcorn.
