Andrew J. Hoffman to discuss climate change at RIT
Noted author and professor is a scholar of environmental issues and sustainable enterprise
Andrew J. Hoffman, author of How Culture Shapes the Climate Change Debate, is coming to Rochester Institute of Technology as a guest speaker on Friday, Oct. 9. The event is open to the public and will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. in Webb Auditorium, James. E. Booth Hall. A booksigning will follow.
Hoffman is the Holcim (US) professor of sustainable enterprise at the University of Michigan, a position that holds joint appointments at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business and the School of Natural Resources and Environment. He has published over a dozen books, the latest focusing on the climate change debate and why American public opinion is at such variance with the scientific community.
“The United States has been extremely slow in reacting to the overwhelming evidence that climate change is a serious threat,” said Sandra Rothenberg, professor in RIT’s Saunders College of Business and director of the business school’s Institute for Business Ethics and Social Responsibility, and Department of Public Policy chair at RIT’s College of Liberal Arts.
“This is in part due to the continuing disbelief in this science by powerful players in the political arena. Understanding how people form their perceptions of science is critical if we are to develop effective policies to address this and other social challenges. Drawing from political science, psychology and sociology, Professor Hoffman provides some insight into how these perceptions are formed.”
The event is supported by Saunders College of Business, College of Liberal Arts, Department of Public Policy and Institute for Business Ethics and Responsibility.
