Doug Manchee (1954-2018) was an Associate Professor and the Program Chairperson of the advertising photography program in the School of Photographic Arts and Sciences at the Rochester Institute of Technology.
Early in his education, Doug studied graphic design in California with Greg Berryman, and this exposure provided a visual sensitivity that served him well as he moved to a career as photographer, author, administrator and teacher. With multiple visual strengths, Doug was a superb critical thinker, enhancing his thinking, writing, teaching and scholarship. His photographic studies were influenced by master photographers and teachers Jack Welpott and Don Worth, with whom he studied at San Francisco State University.
He worked as a commercial photographer in both San Francisco and Rochester before joining the faculty at RIT in 1997. His clients included Adobe Systems, Bausch and Lomb, Corning Glass, Eastman Kodak, Esprit, Riney and Partners, McCann Erickson, Xerox, and many others. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally and is included in numerous public and private collections. He has been an artist-in-residence at Light Work and the Visual Studies Workshop and has received grants from Light Work, The NImoy Foundation, and the Andrea Frank Foundation.
