Thematic Form Studies 2, an exhibit of new paintings by R. Roger Remington, opens at RIT’s Grid Space/University Gallery on February 12, 2024. In these paintings Remington continues his personal exploration of formal visual elements The work is a continuing blend of systematic and intuitive aesthetic values.
"From my beginnings in art, the quest has been to understand and create form that makes sense and strongly embodies formal aesthetic qualities. As my process and skills matured over the years and in many Modernist design or art contexts, understandings of arrangement, color, line, format and shape intend to evidence logic and control. The overriding concept or idea for a given piece is expressed in the dynamic relationship of the visual variables. Massimo Vignelli said, “Design without structure is anarchy.” In a like manner, organization is central to my process. Every piece of work In this exhibit is constructed on the same grid which is left visible in some pieces. I apply the same select color palate equally and geometry is essential to my choices of shape. Dimensional pieces expand the aesthetic options. Overall my process and expressions are an interplay between intuition and systems, design and art, concept and form, thinking and feeling." - R. Roger Remington
Remington retired in in 2020 after a 57 years on the faculty in Graphic Design. He is RIT’s Vignelli Distinguished Professor of Design Emeritus.
