Tubes
In researching the Vignelli ethos and mission, I wanted to focus on the motif of modularity, (as is exhibited in the heller kitchenware) as well as the general philosophy that design is one. In earlier iterations, I wanted to achieve an actual system of nesting vials that could be rearranged, but after the initial dialogue with the glassblowers, I decided that that the same end goal would be better achieved with a singular piece. This gave way to the final design of a series of vials or tubes which would be uniform in width but variant in length to be bound radially in plan at the base, then warp and distort in form outward in order to separate, organize and give hierarchy to the flowers that the vase would house. This was first done with one-inch diameter tubes and a five-inch diameter base, then further refined to use half-inch diameter tubes and a two-inch diameter base.
