Returning to designing physical objects from the digital space of UX/UI has rekindled my appreciation for one of Industrial Design’s foundational principles: ‘Form follows function,’ as well as Vignelli’s ethos on appropriateness. I aimed to create a piece where functionality took precedence, letting it dictate the object’s form. When tasked with designing a drinking vessel, I recognized the importance of selecting a specific use-case and context to ensure
functionality. Mojitos happen to be my preferred cocktail, and crafting them involves a surprisingly scientific process. Unlike the common practice of shaking, which damages mint leaves and alters the taste, the ideal method involves building the drink directly in the glass. Rum, mint, lime, sugar, ice, soda water—each component was carefully considered. The glass features a ridged bottom section to separate the initial ingredients (rum, mint, lime, sugar) and a flared top that guides the addition of ice and soda water, also serving as a resting place for garnishes. Its substantial weight ensures stability and height, allowing for effortless sipping through a combined straw and stirrer, without concerns of tipping or fragility. Every detail—from size and weight to texture and color—was meticulously chosen to honor andenhance the Mojito experience.
