Lewis P. Ross Hall (ROS)

Lewis P. Ross

Lewis Ross was a shoe manufacturer and banker in Rochester. He was served on the Board of Directors from the inception of Mechanics Institute, 1885 to 1915, acting as President of the Board for 14 years. He gave generously to the Institute in its early years, when substantial community support was needed to develop the school.  Mr. Ross believed strongly in vocational education, that it was of prime importance to the welfare and success of the community and the state, that young men and women be afforded the very best opportunity possible to obtain, with the least expenditure of time and money, that kind of an education which would enable them to become skilled in some vocation which would render them independent and self-supporting.
