Other Degree Granting Units
Dr. Pervaiz is dedicated to the research in materials and material processing. More specifically, his research interests span the broad areas of metal cutting of difficult-to-cut materials, materials science with respect to composites and additive manufacturing, and material process modeling using finite element analysis (FEA).
The primarily working area is sustainable machining with focus on difficult-to-cut high performance materials. The machinability of high-performance alloys is very poor due to the high strain rate-based machining operation and their inherent properties (such as high hot hardness, low thermal conductivity and high strain hardening etc.). Cutting fluids are used in the machining processes due to their several functions like lubrication, cooling and ease in chip removal. On the other hand, these cutting fluids are toxic and non-biodegradable in nature. They can also cause problems to the human health by facilitating skin and breathing issues. In case of any mishandling related to disposal they pose critical danger to the soil and water resources. Therefore, strict environmental regulations have been imposed to limit the usage of cutting fluid in manufacturing sector. In order to limit the usage of cutting fluids in machining, it is desirable to machine materials under dry cutting or near dry cutting environments. Near dry and minimum quantity lubrication (MQL) techniques are being explored to replace conventional flood cooling method to reduce environmental burden. Dr. Pervaiz is working to improve the machinability of such high-performance materials using green or sustainable approaches. The research benefits aerospace, automotive, biomedical and petrochemical industries.
