Kate Gleason Roommates Reminisce 45 Years Later!
Note: Kate Gleason roommates reminisce 45 Years Later! Gary T. Staffo '75 (KGCOE) a resident of Springfield, VA has for several years been in contact with the RIT Alumni Office and finally, this past summer was able with the assistance of Meg Taber MS '14 (CLA) to visit the RIT Campus and with Shane M. Ryan as his guide spend 3 hours walking the Campus and sharing memories from his undergraduate days at RIT. Gary lived in Kate Gleason in room 6008 his Freshman year of 1970, and had the privilege of working as an RIT Audio Visual Aide, and three different upperclassmen roommates who each shared the unique experience of playing on the RIT Football Team (undefeated since 1978) under Coach Tommy Coughlin. Kate Gleason Floors 6 and 7 at that time were like an unauthorized fraternity house and as such was one of first co-ed with the girls being on one side of each floor and the guys on the other. Compared to the all boys next door in Nathaniel Rochester, it was two different worlds. There were very few relationships between these girls and guys, as the common contact and the numerous shared events and time together for planned events such as parties and study breaks soon created a more familial relationship closer to brother and sister for all.
With the help of the RIT Alumni Office, Gary was able to contact his three roommates and another friend who was also a resident of Kate Gleason Floors 6 and 7. During their RIT college days the local hangouts off-campus included Ronnie's Suburban Inn, the Varsity Inn, and Red Creek. After his initial visit to RIT in August Gary was able to make a return trip in September and was able to host a brunch with his three old roommates and their mutual friend at their old Red Creek hangout which is now MacGregor's Grill & Tap Room. Needless to say, the reunion was a joyous event filled with laughter and old tales of days gone by and memorable moments of the crazy antics each and all were party to with reckless abandon. Listening to these stories now they seem unbelievable and incredible, but all were attested to by the four in attendance and some were even caught in photos from those crazy mid-1970s. The attached photo was taken at MacGregor's during this reunion and shown from left to right are the guilty parties: Brad McCarthy '73 (KGCOE); Bill Provinski '73 (KGCOE); Joe Widay BS/ME '74 (KGCOE); Pat Muscarella BS/ME '73 (KGCOE) and Gary T. Staffo '75 (KGCOE).
Stay tuned for a second photo that is of an "Oldies But Goodies Greaser Party" poster produced by our Kate Gleason 6th and 7th Floor resident artists, photographers, and printers. Our parties and posters were outstanding and very successful as proven by the fact that each and every party was profitable, overflowing with alcohol, and very well attended. Hopefully, some of our fellow Kate Gleason 6th and 7th Floor residents will get a big kick out of this poster and self-identify. Gary T. Staffo can be found in the front the second from the right wearing sunglasses, a scar on his left arm, with a chain over his shoulder and a cigarette dangling from his mouth.
