Bio
Dave Sluberski is a Principal Lecturer at the Rochester Institute of Technology’s School of Film & Animation, specializing in sound design and audio technology. He was a consultant on the design team for MAGIC Spell Studios for all state-of-the-art sound design. He was Senior Audio Technologist at WXXI/NPR-PBS affiliate for 25 years. Through his company, West Rush Media LLC, he produces, designs and mixes audio for many broadcast media and digital distribution networks, including independent feature films/documentaries. WRM clients include the 2023 PGA Tournament, Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, WXXI, the University of Rochester and the CBC, as well as indie filmmakers. His many awards include the coveted George Foster Peabody Award (1994), as well as numerous Telly, Gabriel and NYS Emmy awards. Dave considers himself a recreational welder; he and his wife, Dr. Sandra Boysen Sluberski, enjoy their classic cars and reside in Rush, NY.

Basic Sound Recording
3 Credits
Students will learn to work with sound and to distinguish and evaluate proper sound techniques for film and animation productions. The course lays the foundation for professional work in the sound industry. Each student records audio and prepares a mixed soundtrack to professional quality standards.

Advanced Sound Recording
3 Credits
This course continues the work from Basic Sound Recording to include audio synchronized or locked to picture and the use of Foley and ADR production techniques. Students develop workflow approaches for complex multi-track mixing and signal manipulation. Each student prepares a mixed track to professional quality standards and manages sound and video files between various hardware and software platforms.

Mixing and Sound Design

Continue the work from Advanced Sound Recording by mixing multi-track sessions with video to post-produce several different projects to professional standards. Learn how to listen and develop a trained ear while understanding proper equalization and use of effects and digital signal routing. Sessions can include documentaries, dialog and musical productions. Create templates and develop editing/mixing techniques to balance creativity and time constraints of a typical project.

SOFA Independent Study will provide students with the ability to study in a specialized area with an individual faculty member. Students, with the assistance of a faculty adviser, should propose a course of study or project with clearly defined deliverables. Students must obtain permission of an instructor and complete the Independent Study Permission Form to enroll. Student must have a minimum of a 3.0 GPA to apply.
