Sandra Johnson
Sandy Johnson is the Senior Vice President for RIT Student Affairs.
My motivation for my work has always been to improve student learning, facilitate their growth and to prepare them for citizenship in a diverse, complex, and changing world. My passion for the student experience remains the “true north” by which I steer my efforts, but, I have also found a great sense of reward in working with faculty, staff, alumni, and members of the community to build a common vision for our work on behalf of the institution and our students.
1. How do you teach or exemplify Applied Critical Thinking?
Maintaining a state of "positive restlessness" is a vital characteristic of the organizational culture in which I operate. That means I actively support change and improvement by using data in decision making, nurturing thinking differently, and supporting risk-taking to learn and improve.
2. Why do you think Applied Critical Thinking is important in your domain or role?
If I didn't apply critical thinking to my work, I would be operating from a position of deficit.
3. Can you share a story where quality Applied Critical Thinking was key to your success?
Progress and growth benefit students and institutions alike, but planning for them must be intentional and supported by research, data, and a collaborative approach. Applying critical thinking to our work is a hallmark of organizational excellence.
4. How do you use critical thinking in other areas of your life outside of RIT?
Without applying critical thinking to my daily life, I couldn't balance being a professional, a spouse, a mother, a daughter, a sister, a friend, a colleague, a neighbor, etc.
5. Any last critical thoughts?
Never stop asking questions and seeking different perspectives!
