1. HOW DO YOU TEACH OR EXEMPLIFY APPLIED CRITICAL THINKING?
One of the things I love about my job is how it allows me to encourage critical thinking among my students. It's such a rewarding experience to witness their growth in this area. Developing these skills and thinking critically will have a positive impact on their lives in so many different ways. I create engaging and interactive discussions where we tackle real-world problems and even work on collaborative projects. It's all about creating an environment where critical thinking thrives and values students' input. I want them to feel empowered to cultivate their independent thoughts and ideas. By fostering this kind of environment, I not only provide a platform for students to express themselves, but I also help them develop those incredibly valuable critical thinking skills that will serve them well throughout their lives. Throughout this process, I ensure that everything runs smoothly, ensuring everyone feels supported and nurtured in their learning journey while providing excellent service to the community.
2. WHY DO YOU THINK APPLIED CRITICAL THINKING IS IMPORTANT IN YOUR DOMAIN OR ROLE?
In my previous role at the Campus Center and soon within the Student Hall for Exploration and Development, I had the pleasure of working with some amazing student employees who played a crucial role at the information desk. It was always exciting to see what questions would come their way daily. I provided comprehensive training to the students, equipping them with knowledge about various areas and resources available at RIT. This enabled them to determine the best ways to seek additional information to effectively assist our guests at the desk. I encouraged the students to think creatively and develop their own solutions. It was important for me to empower them to trust their abilities and confidently manage different situations. It was incredibly rewarding when they often would create innovative solutions, introduce new processes, and find creative ways to enhance our service in the area.
3. CAN YOU SHARE A STORY WHERE QUALITY APPLIED CRITICAL THINKING WAS KEY TO YOUR SUCCESS?
I am skilled at using critical thinking when managing resource allocation. It's all about figuring out how to prioritize resources like time, staff, and materials, which means carefully evaluating all the needs and then making informed decisions that will benefit the community the most. Using my critical thinking skills, I can ensure that any decisions or actions taken in a student-centered facility are well thought-out, flexible, and aimed at enhancing students' sense of belonging and engagement on campus.
4. HOW DO YOU USE CRITICAL THINKING IN OTHER AREAS OF YOUR LIFE OUTSIDE OF RIT?
As a parent of young children, using critical thinking is essential in making thoughtful decisions and responding to challenges in a way that promotes their growth and well-being. It's all about considering various factors, understanding their developmental stages, and then adapting my strategies accordingly. For instance, I carefully analyze situations to ensure my guidance is age-appropriate while encouraging their curiosity and fostering problem-solving skills. By applying critical thinking, I can navigate the complexities of parenting and create a nurturing environment that supports my children's development.
5. ANY LAST CRITICAL THOUGHTS YOU WISH TO SHARE?
I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be the inaugural executive director of the Student Hall for Exploration and Development! With this role, I have the chance to apply critical thinking and ensure that our facility's blend of technology, art, and design goes beyond merely a combination of disciplines. Instead, we aim to create a cohesive, innovative space that prepares students for a dynamic future. I am genuinely excited to embark on this journey and make a positive impact on our student's growth and development.
