Bring more Indigenous students to RIT and increase their representation in STEM fields. Those are the goals of an upcoming conference at RIT.
RIT is hosting virtually, the 2021 American Indian Science & Engineering Society (AISES) Region 6 conference March 24 and 25.
The mission of AISES is to increase the number of American Indian and Alaskan Natives in engineering, science, and other related technology disciplines.
The theme is “The Future is Now”. Abigail Reigner (Comanche), a second- year mechanical engineering student is the Region 6 representative for AISES. She and members of the campus chapter have been very busy planning the two-day virtual event.
College students from across the northeast region of the United States will have an opportunity to take part in workshops, present their research and network. Danielle Boyer, founder of STEAM Connection is scheduled to talk about her work to make science, technology, engineering, the arts and math more accessible to children. The keynote speaker will be Dr. Roger Dube, RIT professor emeritus in the Center for Imaging Science.
Next month, April 16th, the Future Stewards Program will virtually welcome Native American high school students for Native American Outreach Day. They will learn more about the RIT campus and take part in informational breakout sessions hosted by RIT admissions. Topics range from financial literacy to the admissions interview process. The keynote speaker is RIT College of Art & Design associate professor Mindy Magyar (Mi’kmaq) who will host a masterclass on Codesign.
