You can read about Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholar and Men of Color, Honor and Ambition (MOCHA) student Joseph Vazquez in an article written by the team at Kate Gleason College of Engineering. Vazquez is a third year mechanical engineering student. In the article, he describes his experience with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Summer Research Program. Congrats! Check out this story!
Another Destler/Johnson Rochester City Scholar and MCAS student Karla Torres, is helping to create a Web Exhibition in honor of the Harriet Tubman Bicentennial Celebration. It is called "Harriet Tubman's Life and Legacy". It is a project underway in a Women and Gender History class project taught by Tamar Carroll, associate professor and chair, Department of History. Torres, a first-year psychology major and classmate Matteo Randall, are creating a music page for the web. It focuses on how spirituals were used as “coded songs” and played such a prominent role in the Underground Railroad. The goal is to have the finished Web Exhibition up and running by the end of the semester. Torres came up with the idea of using music in the exhibition and says, “In creating this web exhibition we hope to at least make an impact and we can bring attention to such a strong powerful woman. We are really excited to see what others think and to further spread the message that Harriet Tubman's legacy cannot be erased and that it's important for the new generation to step up and educate one another.” RIT is one of the sponsors of the bicentennial event.
