Navajo Frybread, Storytelling with RIT Minett Professor Perry Ground and Making Water Drums: There’s a lot going on during Native American Heritage Month
RIT Celebrates Native American Heritage Month in November with some exciting events planned by the Future Stewards Program all focusing on the rich history, heritage and culture of Indigenous peoples.
First, get ready for Native American Walking Trivia a few days before that on October 27th and October 29th. It’s happening in the Campus Center Breezeway between 11-2p.m. Members of the Native American Student Association, the American Indian Science and Engineering Society, and the Native American Future Stewards Program will be there asking Native American trivia questions for a chance to earn a Java’s Token for a free tea/coffee!
The official kick off is Monday, November 1st from noon- 2 p.m. in the Fireside Lounge with Indigenous music, delicious food and vendors will have Haudenosaunee jewelry and other craft items for sale.
November 3rd, please join us as RIT Minett Professor Perry Ground (Onondaga, Turtle Clan) shares “Stories from the People of the Longhouse” from noon to 1:30 p.m.in the Bamboo Room in the Student Alumni Union. Ground is a Native American storyteller whose work is steeped in the history of the Haudenosaunee. He was appointed Minett Professor at RIT for the 2021-2022 academic year. Ground will host a second storytelling session later the same day from 5:30 -6:30p.m. in the Fireside lounge.
November 10th Tuscarora Nation elder James Bissell will demonstrate how to make traditional water drums and explain their purpose in the Haudenosaunee community. The event is in SDC 1300 from 4-5:30 p.m.
November 11thyou can help commemorate Canandaigua Treaty Day in Canandaigua, New York.
November 15th join Minett Professor Perry Ground who will lead a conversation titled “Re-thinking Thanksgiving: A Native American Perspective on an American Holiday” in the Bamboo Room. It’s from 6-7:30 p.m.
