- Celebrate Native American Heritage Month
Be sure to join us November 2nd for RIT’s kickoff celebration of Native American Heritage Month in Fireside Lounge from 11:00AM to 2:00PM. This entire month we are honoring the rich legacy and contributions of Native Americans with a variety of exciting and informative events. The theme this year is “Indigenous Voices: Bridging Science and Culture” which highlights the intersection of Indigenous perspectives, scientific knowledge, and cultural heritage, emphasizing the contributions of Native individuals, particularly Native women, in fields like STEM and environmental advocacy.
Here’s what’s happening:
Thursday, November 2nd from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM Fireside Lounge- Native American Heritage Month Kickoff Celebration. Meet special guest Richard Hammell, who will show case his remarkable Wampum belt display. This intricate art form is steeped in history and symbolism and offers you a glimpse into the heritage of Native communities.
Thursday, November 9th from 6:00PM to 9:00PM- Frybread N’ Friends. Come by Colby Kitchen to learn how to make Navajo frybread with AISES President Sherry Sneezer and enjoy some authentic Hawaiian dishes with the Hawai’i Culture Club.
Tuesday, November 14th from 8:00 PM to 9:00 PM- Join us at the RIT Observatory for an unforgettable exploration of "Indigenous Astronomy as told by the Haudenosaunee." Samantha Doxtator, a storyteller from the Haudenosaunee community, will show you through Indigenous eyes, how the night sky contains ancient wisdom and cultural heritage through stories passed down through generations.
Wednesday, November 29th from 1:30PM to 2:30PM Liberal Arts Hall (LBR-A205) “Forensic Insights in Indian Country with Deneen Hernandez” an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians with 30 years of experience in law enforcement including the FBI. Hernandez will share her journey in forensic science from deciphering cryptic symbols to unraveling illicit gambling records and share the possibilities forensic science offers.
Thursday, November 16th Time: TBD Golisano Institute for Sustainability "Radioactive Waste in our Backyard" with Dr. Shannon Seneca, an enrolled member of the Seneca Nation of Indians, an esteemed scientist and advocate who is at the forefront of critical environmental work on radioactive waste in the Allegany and Cattaraugus Seneca Indian Territories. Dr. Seneca's insights provide a unique perspective on the intersection of environmental science and Indigenous rights.
Thursday, November 30th 5:00PM to 8:00PM Grace Watson Hall | Gracie’s Dining. At the end of the month, take part in “Celebrating 15 Years of Indigenous Excellence” with an array of traditional Native and Indigenous cuisine and a panel discussion on what it truly means to be a Native and Indigenous American in today's dynamic world.
