Co-Crafting Democracy Explored Through Art in New Exhibition
Be sure to check out “Co-Crafting Democracy: Fiber Arts and Activism” at the RIT University Gallery. It opens Wednesday, November 13th. The exhibition is a collaborative effort between the Division of Diversity and Inclusion’s Taj Smith, executive director for Culture and Diversity Education and the curators Juilee Decker, program director Museum Studies and Hinda Mandell, professor in the School of Communication. Students from the museum studies program helped create and install the display.
Decker and Mandell point out an interesting note. Their call for artists’ works happened before Americans cast their ballots on Election Day. Artists were posed with this question: “What role can you play in “co-crafting democracy leading up to, and following, the 2024 U.S. presidential election?” Decker and Mandell even expanded the idea of democracy in the form of the actual exhibition itself by accepting all works submitted unless they deemed it obscene or incendiary.
There will be a special reception for “Co-Crafting Democracy: Fiber Arts and Activism” November 14th from 5pm to 7pm. The event is free and open to the public. Please register for the event here. The exhibition runs through Friday, December 13th.
